Accessibility Statement

This statement is intended to accurately describe the layout and facilities that we offer to the public, and is not meant to be an opinion on the suitability of our centre for people with specific access needs.

Rock and Rapid is located near South Molton; “The Gateway to Exmoor”, only minutes away from the moor itself. It is also right next to the A361, meaning quick access to either Tiverton or Barnstaple. We’re only a short distance from the beautiful North Devon coast, where we run some of our activities.

Our bunkhouse has beds for 40 people; 2 communal rooms with alpine bunks, and 2 double rooms with bunk beds. Each of the alpine rooms has an en suite shower room with large toilet facilities, and low to ground showers. The double rooms share a single shower room, again with low shower and toilet facilities. There is a designated disabled shower room in the main centre that can be used on request. There is also ample room on the premises for camper vans or caravans, with electric supply.

The bunkhouse has wheelchair access, as does the centre itself. All of the centres public areas are level, with open doorways and a ramp for centre entry on request.

We look forward to seeing you at the centre soon; if you have any queries or requests, whether before, during, or after your stay, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01769 573380, or via email, at

Before Your Stay

If you are making your own way to the centre, you’ll find us just off the North Devon Link Road, simply turn off towards North Molton and you’ll see our entrance (if you’re using SatNav, our postcode is EX36 3NA). We can also arrange for you to be brought here by coach, but please note there will be an additional charge for this service.

Our nearest bus station is South Molton, a 10-minute walk from the centre, though this walk would involve occasionally walking along road with no pavement. The nearest train station is in Barnstaple, a 10-minute drive away along the Link Road. We can also arrange for you to be collected by taxi, but again, this may involve additional charges. If you would like us to arrange your transport, please mention this at the time of your booking.

Arrival and Car Park

There is a large free car park on site directly outside the main door, with external floodlights going on after dark.

The car park surface is gravel, with decked areas and picnic benches for general use. The main entrance is through a single door, and then descending three steps that can be ramped on request. The side door is a double door, with a single step to go up which can again be ramped on request.

Our staff will be happy to assist with luggage if asked.

Centre Layout

Rock and Rapid is based in an old mill building, with a recent extension on the side. After the initial stairs, the entire building is level or ramped, with stairs only needed to access the balcony. The Bunkhouse is slightly further down the drive than the centre itself, and across the road, but directly opposite the centres side door.

Reception is on the ground floor and is accessed from the main door via three steps from the car park. The floor surface is carpeted with standard low pile carpet over a level concrete floor. The area is evenly and well lit, with overhead lighting. Pens and paper are available on request. We also have staff able to converse in French and Spanish if necessary. Our reception staff will greet you and introduce you to the instructors working with your group, who will then brief the group and familiarise you with the centre and facilities. There is also a seating area in reception with a choice of seating, free Wi-Fi, a variety of magazines, and a café.

The Bunkhouse sleeps 40 people in total, with 2 double rooms, and 2 bunkrooms. All the bedrooms are level and accessible, with no step access. The doors are all light wood and are easy to open, or can be left open easily. The bedrooms are all well lit; the alpine rooms each have multiple windows and overhead lighting, and the double rooms have single switch lights with economic bulbs, ensuring that the room is illuminated slowly and gradually, reducing sudden glare. The beds are all fixed in place, but the alpine bunks can be accessed from 3 sides, with the bottom bunk only inches from the floor. The double rooms have single bunk beds, with one side flush with the wall. All of the bedrooms have a level entry shower room, with toilet facilities. The bedrooms are carpeted with low pile carpet, with high contrast to wall colour, and all of the bathrooms are either vinyl or tiled.

Shower Rooms

All bedrooms have access to ensuite shower rooms. Toilets facilities are level, whilst the showers are slightly above floor level, with one room having a wet room. There are low sinks, with clear spaces underneath. *Please note: one alpine room does have a single step to enter.

Communal Areas; Halls, Stairs, Corridors

All communal areas are well lit from above. The centre is carpeted with short pile carpet that contrasts with the wall colour. All stairs have two handrails; one either side.

Communal Areas; Café

The café is on the ground floor in the centre, with easy access from reception or the side door. The floor is short pile high contrast carpet, and is well lit from above. The café is open at any time. It is also a comfortable observation area for the climbing wall, with a choice of tables and seating.

Communal Areas; Centre Toilets

The main centre has three toilet rooms; male, female, and a large single disabled toilet with handrails. The disabled toilets have a pull cord light, whilst the male/female toilets have motion-activated lights. All bathrooms have low sinks with clear space underneath, and solid floors.

Communal Areas; Climbing Wall

The climbing wall itself is in the main building. It has level floors with a low pile carpet, with high contrast to the wall colour. The walls themselves are yellow, with bright patterned handholds, and a variety of difficulties. All high overhangs are coloured orange, standing out from the rest of the wall. The wall is lit with floodlights and spots, with two windows.

Communal Areas; Low Ropes

The low ropes course is outside, adjacent to the car park. It is easy to access from the car park, and is wood chipped or turfed. An instructor will always run the low ropes course, and there is plenty of space for support staff to assist participants.

Highly qualified and experienced instructors run all of our activities, with experience in dealing with all manner of abilities and needs.

Whilst basic mobility and comprehension are required for most activities, our staff will assist where possible, and sessions can be one on one if necessary.

We also have links with multiple other centres, including some specialist centres for those with specific needs, and so we can arrange sessions to be run at these premises. If you will need this service, please mention it at the time of booking.
