BORNEO
Borneo is truly a natural Eden
Home to the world's oldest tropical rainforest and epicentre of evolution...
This island nurtures wildlife that is mind-blowing in its variety, strangeness and beauty
The mountainous areas of Sabah and Sarawak provide some of the best jungle trekking in Asia. The protected jungles of Sabah are teeming with wildlife such as elephants, monkeys, orang-utan and big cats and the tribal lands of Sarawak (Kelabit Highlands) are scattered with indigenous people living in traditional longhouses complete with their stretched earlobes and tribal tattoos.
Our 21- 28 day expeditions to Borneo take you trekking into the heartland of Sarawak to meet the Kelabit tribal people. You will also trek in the protected jungles of Sabah including the Danum Valley, staying in hammocks and using the jungle training learnt earlier in the expedition. There will be an opportunity to climb Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in SE Asia as well as visiting the famous Sepilok Orang-utan Sanctuary or wildlife spotting on a boat safari on the Kinabatangan River. You will complete your experience on a deserted tropical island with coral reefs.
Our project location to work with the Kelabit people to protect the Kelabit Highlands. It is fundamentally important that the local people continue to benefit from their environment that has sustained them up to now. The encroachment of urban areas, tourism and commerce means many of the Kelabit lands are under threat. We work with them on community projects at their request to help them develop low impact sustainable tourism. In the past we have completed project here including construction of a suspension bridge to provide access to a cut off tribal area, while we have also worked to protect the wildlife with an orang-utan rehabilitation programme.
An excellent way to finish the trip is to come out of the jungle to the coast. Here we can undertake the PADI Discover Scuba day which includes scuba training then either a snorkel or Scuba dive along the coral reefs of the Marine reserve. This provides an exciting opportunity to experience both rainforest and reef. Alternatively, you can take diving more seriously and plan several days at the dive school...
